Accessing the Bioinformatics Cluster

The methods described below can be used to login to the Bioinformatics Cluster and transfer files to / from the cluster.

SSH

You can use SSH to login to your home directory on the cluster. Here are the steps required for this:

1) Request an account on the cluster

2) Install SSH client software on your workstation or laptop. We recommend PuTTY, however, other SSH client applications should also work.

3) In your SSH software use the following settings:

Address (hostname OR IP address): bioinformatics.colostate.edu OR 129.82.246.2

Port: 22

4) Open an SSH connection to the cluster.

Username: the cluster username that was assigned to you when the account was set up. Enter when prompted at login.

Password: the cluster password that was assigned to you when the account was set up. Enter when prompted at login.

The session will connect to your home directory on the cluster.

FTP

You can use FTP to transfer files to and from your home directory on the cluster. Here are the steps required for this:

1) Request an account on the cluster

2) Install FTP client software on your workstation or laptop. We recommend FileZilla, however, other FTP client applications should also work.

3) In your FTP software use the following settings:

Address (hostname OR IP address): bioinformatics.colostate.edu OR 129.82.246.2
Username: the cluster username that was assigned to you when the account was set up

Password: the cluster password that was assigned to you when the account was set up

Port: 21

Make sure that "passive mode" is turned OFF. This setting is often found among the Connection or Firewall settings, but it varies in different applications.

5) Drag-and-drop files to / from your workstation to / from the cluster.
